Plywood and Paint
Embracing dark interiors has been on my to-do-list for a while now, but there’s something very safe about white emulsion and differing from that felt a little daunting…. six months later and how stoked am I that I did! Admitedly, I didn’t paint the entire room dark, instead, I chose one wall and the entrance to our ensuite which included the door, I think it works really well and now, all I want to do is paint more sections of our home with colour.
I’ve been inspired multiple times by interior designer Liz Kamarul to use our walls as a blank canvas for creativity, Liz paints some seriously cool murals and she styles them so beautifully. I love the relationship between pattern and texture and wanted to completely change the layout of our bedroom, we moved in this time last year and our bedroom is part of the extension which sits above the garage making it much cooler than the rest of the house especially in winter. For some reason we placed the head of our bed under the window which seriously didn’t help the temperature. I’ve included some before and after snaps below so you can see the transformation.
The colours in the mural were inspired by a pillow I found from T.K.Maxx of all places! I loved the natural hues and how the pink, blue and mustard blend together. I took the pillow case to our local paint shop where they matched up three paint sample pots. The pink colour in the curtains was a complete fluke, these were from Magic Linen, they fall to the floor and while they don’t block any light they do add a real warmth to the bedroom.
Jamie, my husband, built the plywood headboard which runs the full length of the wall, the room feels much more grounded with a feature headboard, he did such a great job, he also thrifted an old school desk which was being chucked into a skip, he clad the top and sides in plywood to blend in with the headboard and he reduced the depth of the desk so as not to encroach on the room too much. I’ll be the first to admit I was not convinced we would ever use the desk when it first turned up, but he proved me wrong, he’s a determined soul and I love that about him.
The plants, pots, pillows, bedding and the blanket are from local shops around Devon and Cornwall, I love shopping locally and supporting the eclectic boutiques we are lucky enough to have so close by, I’ve listed them in the credits below. Thanks for stopping by and visiting my bedroom make-over.
